Indeed. A car taking it's very first MOT has suspension bushes in a far=20 WORSE state than my Capri.

Please read my later post pointing to the brake efficiency table in the tester's manual.

Seems reasonable to me that a tester would look at something marginal on your Capri, realise it was generally well cared for, and so mark it as an advisory with reasonable confidence that you would *want* to fix it.

OTOH, a similar marginal point on a generally neglected car would, perhaps justifiably, warrant a fail on the basis that the owner would be unlikely to get it fixed.

Maybe they shouldn't do this, but for sure that's what happens!

Yes but new vehicles won't tend to fail on these, what with them being new & well in excess of the required standard. You'd probably be suspicious of a tester who continously failed 3 year old cars on such items. That's got nothing to do with judgement.

Are you trying to tell me that a car that's reached (say) 250k miles in three years before it's first MOT isn't likely to have utterly knackered bushes?

Yes, structural corrosion's a different issue - but it's an issue that few cars under about 10-15yo have these days anyway.

Ditto cars doing 250000m. That's why it's in the test. However you'd expect to see more old cars failing on them than new cars. I'm not sure what you think is odd about that. Youb don't expect every old car to fail, in the same way as you don't expect every new car to pass. FWIW my last A6 was still on it's original suspension bushes at that mileage. The engine mounts where shagged though.

I read the post as suggesting advisories be given to older cars in situations where on a newer car a fail would be given.

Ah, I was assuming they where looking for "helpfull" garages passing older cars that maybe shouldn't.
