What a rusty car

Chris Whelan mumbled incoherently to the rest of uk.rec.cars.maintenance:

Wouldnt make much sense, they make most of their profits off services, repairs and spares. If they all failed at once they'd be financially unviable before they could have made much profit. Ideally you keep the body looking perfect (not rotting away) and make the mechanicals fail slowly. That way people see the vehicle as worth repairing each time and spend more than if you just say "oh its all gone to pot, bin it".

( snipped-for-privacy@burnt.org.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Ah, yes, the good ol' days when people were punting that kinda shed about, right...?

I can't think of anything in the current MOT that's particularly difficult for anything that ought to be on the road to pass with ease.

To be fair, I didn't actually pay for it, but the Ami 8 I acquired a few years ago was worse than that...

The chassis has since been used under a 2cv, the engine and box are awaiting re-use (may go in the Acadiane soon), and I've still got the complete bulkhead sat in the lockup.

*shrug* driving POS like that didn't seem to bother people too much back then and, to be honest, I don't recall things being a lot more 'dangerous' on the roads.

yep, I remember rivet on plates and polyfiller being acceptable repairs ;-)

seriously I had a K reg Fiat 850 coupe in the 70's. By '81 the thing was scrap.

That was pretty good going for a FIAT....
