Hi - my brother hasn't had his car serviced since he bought it 4years ago! I said I'd do it for him but can anyone tell me what type of oil they use? Synthetic/Semi or mineral oil? 1996 1.6 LX Also,haven't looked under the bonnet yet,are they quite straightforward to work on?

You can't cook an engine by putting the wrong grade in. At worst you'll bring on premature wear but it won't be for a good few thousand miles.
Going on past performance and inadequate servicing from the car owner... I stand by my comment... :)
