whats this then ?

Sorry for posting twice today, but I had my Pug. 306 1.9D up on the ramps yesterday day and had my head stuck under the engine ( like you do ) Whilst checking things out, I noticed a round canister type thing behind the engine, which I could not ID ? It's kind of like one of those camping gas cyclinders, all rusted though.

Oil filter?

It's part of the exhaust system. Ignore it unless it rusts through.

On the nail IMO. That's exactly what they look like. But all rusted? Mike.

Or it's a fuel filter. Either way, they do rust if the car hasn't been serviced.

Yes it's an expansion box on the exhaust. Just leave it alone, they rarely give problems on a diesel.

That's exactly what it is, only the 1.9d non turbo had them , I have seen a

205 without one, the exhaust manifold had provision for it but just a blanking plate fitted If it rusts remove it and put a blanking plate in it's place. IIRC it was only fitted to the Peugeot version the Citroen version of the engine never had it. Never quite worked out if it was a resonator box to help quieten the exhaust noise, but having removed it never seemed to make any noticeable difference.

Oil filter on these engines is mounted on the front. On what looks like a sandwich plate cooler...
