Off-road, long wheel travel and soft suspension are what you need. On-road, in a vehicle with a high CoG, that tends to cause it to fall over.

Naah, it's because they're crap drivers who aren't in touch with their vehicle. They also don't seem to know how wide their vehicles are (regardless of 4x4 or other), the phrase "fekking hell, you could drive a bus through there" is used around 6 times on my way to work ;-)

Interestingly, the best way to go over speed bumps in a competent 4x4 is to drive faster, and exploit the suspension travel. Witness the Land Rover Defender when driving over railway sleepers - it's a joggly ride at 10mph but smooth at 30mph.
