Dave, Have centrifugal oil cleaners made it into cars yet? Some lorries have an oil cleaner which uses centrifugal force to remove the particles before returning it to the sump in addition to the standard oil filter, effectively recycling the oil as you drive and lengthening the period between changes.

Centrifugal filters have been standard on diesel Land Rovers for some years. The intermediate [12000 mile/12 month] service changes just the centrifugal cartridge- rotor, with the "traditional" oil-filter cartridge only being changed at a full service [every 36,000 miles/3 years].
