broken oil dipstick in sentra 2002 gxe

The dip stick is broken, the plastic handle is left in my hand with the remaining metal part left in the tube, doe any one knows how to remove ? The dealer is telling me that the have to drop the oil pan, I don't buy it. Does the tube not come out from the engine? if so do I need an o ring? Peter

depending on the mileage and the in service date of the vehicle it may be covered under warranty

The tube probably comes out the pan side. Like Niss_Tech mentioned, maybe it's still under warranty?

Obligatory Disclaimer: this is only my experience with a broken dipstick and does not constitute any actual instructions or advice as to how to deal with the broken dipstick.

After the dipstick to my Sentra GXE was broken by a local Valvoline Instant Oil change shop, I found that only half of the plastic had cracked, leaving the remaining plastic along with the metal part stuck in the tube. Basically, the dipstick had cracked just above the O-ring, because the guy checking the oil was being rough with the dipstick, pulling it out and pushing it back in rather quickly and firmly, due to the fact they had already overfilled the oil and had to drain some out.

I was still actually able to drive the car, so I drove it slowly to the dealer.

The dealer was able to remove it, although they didn't say how, but I wasn't charged for removal of the oil pan so maybe they used some sort of vacuum or suction device.

Seems like those Sentra GXE dipsticks are really delicate parts for how often they would be removed and replaced for checking the oil. I wonder if other Nissan models (eg., Altima, Maxima) have similar issues.

They may have used a 14" long devise that is used on a man to remove bladder stones. Is about 3/16 dia and has tiny but powerfull pinchers on the end. See if your family doctor can get you a pair, they're free. I can send you a picture if needed.

Not on warranty anymore, 130000km. I was able to put a thin long wire down the tube and pull up, it brought it to the top, I then took a bigger wire and insert again into the tube again and a quick pull I was able to get it out. I think I got lucky with this one, boy was I happy.

Apparently the new Nissan Sentra has this problem, I was told this by the dealership. The replacement dipstick is exactly like the original one, plastic handle again.

Thanks everyone for the help and support.
