Where to buy Mobil 1?

I need a litre or two of Mobil 1.

I haven't been there yet but I'm assuming Halfords sell it?

Does anyone know if any of the national stores sell it significantly cheaper i.e drive past Halfords most days and can't be arsed driving ten miles out the way to save a quid.

TIA, Paul

Do Esso still sell it, as they bought out our Mobil franchised garage.

You might be thinking BP. There and Halfords and maybe online are the only places I've seen it but where to get it depends very much on which oil and which grade.

Costco, 0w40 £25 for 4 Litres.

They don't do any other grades of Mobil 1, but they do 5w40 Chevron for £11 for 4L or 10w40 Magnatec for £32 for 9L.

They also have some 10w40, 15w40 and 5w40 Chevron in 20L drums at good prices.

The 5w40 Chevron stuff is beltin, keeps top end quieter for longer.

Hope this helps

I find it very strange that Costco don't sell any 5w30 which (to the best of my limited knowledge) is what modern Fords want. Very annoying as I'm a member, have a massive Costco store about a mile away and two cars which need 5w30 :(

Use 0w40 in your Ford. It happens to be a far superior performing oil in terms of performance specification compared to others in the Mobil oil range.

Is this Chevron stuff fully synthetic oil? It seems very cheap. Is it any good? Similar to Mobil 1? If the top end stays quiet, do you need to change the oil when it gets rattly?

Hello, The Chevron stuff is Synthetic, as best I can remember it is fully synthetic. Chevron = Texaco, more commonly found in the USA.

I believe it is branded Chevron "Supreme".

The top end comment - on my 2.7 v6 Rover 827 I never got round to tightening the pushrod clearances (it was OHC but they used a Single CAM with pushrods to get away with it) and so it could be "tappety" from a cold start, this did not occur when i switched from Magnatec to Chevron

5w40 until the oil had a few thousand miles under it's belt.

Mobil 1 0w40 is a little extreme unless your engine specifically requires/is designed for that grade of oil. In most specced for 10w40 it's a little thin and can find its way past seals that aren't designed with such tight tolerences in mind and leak out, this was the case on one of my previous cars.

My focus manual, prior to selling the car, stated 5w20. As far as I was aware from another thread here, that was understood to be correct, although you'd get away with 5w30.

Why specifically Mobil 1 ? Full synths are a dime-a-dozen these days.

I was in Lidl a few days ago and bought a couple of cans of an SJ-rated semi-synthetic for =A37 each. I remember when I tried to buy even an SI rated oil once (only a few years back) and got funny looks for such a weird and finickey request, for such an impossibly high rated oil.

There's also the API/ACEA and car manufacturer ratings to take account of.

It's a bit odd but the following is taken from Castrol's wedsite about using castrol edge...

"Q. I notice EDGE 5W-30 - can I use this for Ford engines? A. No - this is specific oil for vehicles specifying the VW/Audi specifications and is not suitable for Ford engines which specify a

5W-30 semi synthetic (FRD 913B.)

For modern Fords, we recommend the use of GTX Magnatec 5W-30 only. The only exception is the Galaxy with the VW PD engine which should have Edge 5W-40 (VW 505.01 / FRD 917A specification"

I was in Lidl a few days ago and bought a couple of cans of an SJ-rated semi-synthetic for £7 each. I remember when I tried to buy even an SI rated oil once (only a few years back) and got funny looks for such a weird and finickey request, for such an impossibly high rated oil. ________

What is quality of this £7 oil It may do as they say for 2,000 miles and protection drops right off. At that price I would change the oil every 3,000 miles to be sure, so no real saving to me.

Hello, I think over the last five years i've only ever had one bottle of oil that was anything less than "SL" and that was for the fiesta that's going free above. SJ is well out of date, however if the car was originally specified for SJ then it'll be old and not worth buying expensive oils for anyway unless it's a future classic or you just really love it, "SL" rated oil isn't necessarily expensive.

In Diesel engines oils with a CF rating contain more detergents than those with G/H/I etc. for anyone thinking the higher the better that isn't necessarily true, the higher ones are for some modern diesel engines which have different requirements for the additive pack and ash content.

..Manufacturers often spec the ACEA rating now too and that does vary more.

It's an API SJ rating. As it's going into a Polo with 100k on it and a Volvo with about 250k, then a 15W/40 is an entirely appropriate choice. Normal change intervals too, none of your snobbish 2k rubbish.

On something fussy (like an Audi A4, maybe) it might be a problem - although the 15W is likely to be more of a real issue than it not being an SL.
