You can hire a trailer for the day.
You can hire a trailer for the day.
Actually that's due to the greater induced drag generated by the vertical rear end.
Because it won't fit inside.
You have to be pretty thick and/or very strong to load something on the roof that will actually make the car unstable and not secure it so that it won't fall off.
It's not ideal. But then neither is driving around in an estate car if you never want to carry anything bulky.

If you've got a towbar.
It is certainly not as bad as people driving 4x4 in Chelsea and the only load is a Harrods shopping bag.
Why would anybody need more than a Smart car?
Quite.
And your licence covers you for towing something useful.
Don't think you can legitimately fit a tow bar to a Smart.
For Off Road Use Only Please be aware the Smart 450 is not homologated by Daimler Smart for towing As such any towbar is not legal for road use
Jacobian gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:
Possibly because the 4x4 is far safer than a smart car for its occupants
I would still prefer a 4x4 over a smart car any time , dont get stuck in snow , better road holding , good visability
I must admit that I don't get the fascination with 4x4 as an urban vehicle.
4x4 is rarely needed; most of the time it's just a drag on fuel consumption. The high centre of gravity causes various handling problems; it just doesn't feel as glued to the road as a proper sports salon. A comparable 4x4 in performance and handling will cost almost twice as much. The driving position doesn't seem to deter people driving e.g. Ferrari or Aston Martin.Peter Hill wibbled on Sunday 14 February 2010 09:52
Because the kids are in the car at the time!
And the mattress I moved the other day most certainly wouldn't...

I have a pair of inexpensive long straps with the self locking cleat - means strapping down is always tight and secure...

Why would I pay for something I can do for free?
I own a trailer. When towing it I have to drive 10mph slower & it still uses more fuel than using the roof rack.
Without taking the piss out of Conor, rathchet straps are hardly rocket science.
