Wobbly Monty

My TD Monty wobbles under power.

Between 35mph and 50mph with power on, it waggles from side to side. Not the steering - the body. It feels like the engine's doing a waggledance under the bonnet.

I don't think it's tyres - I had the old set balanced and it didn't go away and I replaced all four yesterday and it's still there.

I don't think it's engine mounts - they're all intact and not torn or broken.

I'm beginning to think it's the drive shafts, but I've no way of isolating which side is at fault. I've tried jacking up one side then the other and driving the wheel through the affected speed range by letting the diff do the work - but the fault isn't apparent.

The torsion damper on the OS shaft doesn't look in the peak of freshness

- is it possible that at speed it's getting thrown to one side against the rather naff rubber inner and causing the wobble? If so - why only under power. As soon as I come off the gas the shudder stops.

Or is it something else entirely?

Any ideas?

Don't think so. The old tyres showed no signs of abnormal wear and the new ones still have the moulding pimples on them after 350 miles!

sounds like drive shafts, prolly inner. From underneath u could try twisting the inner joint while the wheel stays still to see if there is any xs play OR engine mount allowing the engine to twist out of line

Hmm. Trouble is - they're obsolete and hard to get. Bother.

Try Classic Conversions. They can mix and match various shafts to joints, will be able to do something for you.
