crank pulley bolt

hi,

the on going saga of the 95 rebuild...

i assembled the crank pulley, plate and boss and hand tightened the big center bolt as tightly as i could and yet the pulley is not snug at all. i believe the pulley should be snug even with the bolt hand tighten. the manual does not show any other pieces that i might have missed so what is wrong? i do not feel comfortable just adding a washer but i dont see what else i caould do....

any suggestions?

thanks, peter

  1. Fix the shift key on your computer, it seems to be not working? ;-)
  2. Take it back apart again and look for anything that might be preventing it from seating properly, a burr or some such. Use a good light and a magnifying glass if need be.
  3. Lubricate everything and try it again, hand tight. If it's still loose, use a wrench to tighten it another 1/4 - 1/2 turn, see if that gets it tight. If it's still loose, check again, there's something wrong, a missing washer or something....

it was the length of the "key" i made... forward to the radiator and back to figuring out the brackets.....

I think if you know what you're doing (correct metal and correct fit) there shouldn't be a problem with making your own key. Allot of the original keys were too short and allowed them to move inward / outward which I believe has allot to do with them failing. I have first hand experience with this as my

92 appeared to be near failing when I took it apart to do the timing belt. Fortunately I was able to do one of the 'fixes' to get it going again.

Peter, if you made a "crank pulley key" , DO NOT USE IT ! Use a "stock" key!!! The wrong key is how the crank breaks !!!!!!! Please follow the Miata info. to do that work, or it will cost you an engine.
