Intermitent buzz/rattle coming from engine at idle

I have just recently noticed a buzz/rattle coming from the front end of my 94 miata. It doesn't last long enough for me to locate it, or even get out of the car. I have heard it two or three times now and I would like to fix it before something breaks. Any ideas what I might look for? I have nearly 120k miles on my miata, and I am hoping to keep it running for a few more weeks.

I'm at the tail end of a similar problem. Read about 12 posts down "92 Miata Grinding Noise" On mine, it turned out to be the water pump (even though it was just replaced two years ago). The Haynes manual will tell you that a howling noise will come from the water pump when worn out. Take the drive belt off and run the engine, see if the noise disappears.

Two, it could also be the alternator bearings, or 3) the two tensioner bearings for the timing belt.

Heat shields for the exhaust (if in front, heat shields and/or cat con if from underneath). East to fix. Did you mean to say keep it running for a few more "weeks" or "years"? With 120K miles, she's properly broken in and ready for you to start driving it like you stole it, not to junk it.

Actually, just today I noticed the same noise whenever I turn on the AC. Do you think my compressor is going bad? Or would that fit with the water pump theory? Thanks for the help ... I was joking about the 'few more weeks' comment. I'm hoping to keep this car for another couple of years.
