My son claims that the engine used in the MX5 was originally designed for a Mazda rally car weighing about 1000lbs more, ergo, it was nice overkill when used in the Miata.

Anybody know anything about the engines' origin? What other overseas (to the US) models does it power, etc.?

PS: Jitendra, post more. You're an outstanding Miatacomic! ROTFL :)

Not really. The original car was the 323 Turbo - which had the benefit of a turbocharger. So the naturally-aspirated 1.6l motor really wasn't over-powered by any measure. The nice thing was that the Miata engine retained a number of enhancements present in the turbocharged engine which improved reliability.

Lanny is probably a fount of knowledge of this topic...

Huh...? Did I wrote another mistake? Enlighten me, Leon! After all, you are a teacher...

FYI, I did not paint them red. I don't care for the 50bhp boost it'll give me.

Beetje zoals het Nederlands voetbal op het EK...

Thanks for the tip Steven, the Prof did not tell me that.

I went to the local auto store and once I told them why I wanted the red paint, they said that the red costs more than the yellow "cos you get what you pay for". On the store shelves the two colors were priced the same, but the guy said it was a pricing error, which must be true because of the extra

15 bhp I'm gonna get compared to the yellow.

Everyone behind the counter were looking at me and smiling, and I'm not sure why but as I left the store they all started laughing. I think its because they don't think I'm going to be able to handle all the extra power that I will get from the red brake calipers. Still nice guys though cos they told me exactly were under the hood/bonnet I would find the calipers!

RonB, what do you mean "You're an outstanding Miatacomic!". I was serious...I do not take all that extra bhp in a Miata as a laughing matter, and neither should anyone else ; )

Impotent point to remember is that, that much power in the wrong hand/s can be a danger to everyone around them.

Red break calipers do not go with a white Miata. They break too easily.

What gave you that idea?

Dat is niet belangrijk.

Ref: Red vs Yellow paint on the brake calipers.

Now !! Just hold on ! How do you get (brake horsepower maybe????) out of color of paint on the calipers ?? ...... By Definetion, we have all been shown that, white is fast, red is half-fast and yellow is slow.

SO!

(1) If you want "fast brakes" (they don't stop! ) , paint them "white" ! (2) If you want hafassed brakes, paint them "red" ! (3) If you want brakes that will slow or stop you, paint they "yellow" !

I wanted to have them stop me extra good, so I painted mine "yellow" and have "green" pads in them.

Is this a good thing to do ??????????? :-) "oldbe" to the site :-)

Sorry, I had to do it !! We argue about the dumdest things on here.

Thanks a bunch Bruce. Now you've just got me confused and I don't know who to believe. I'm starting to believe that you guys that replied to my posting were pulling pranks on me. On top of that I've already opened the can of expensive red paint and I won't be able to return it!

Well I'll show you. I'm going home and I'm taking my ball with me! ;-)

True, but as we all know, white miata's are already a whole lot faster than other colors. So there's really no point in painting them red. However, if I would paint them red on my black Miata, I would have the same bhp as your white Miata with unpainted calipers. Unless you would paint them yellow or any other non-red color...

Oh, sorry. I mixed you up with another Leon who's also posting on rammm.

Nu niet meer, nee...

He's probably keeping the best trics for himself... Good thing there's usenet!

True! Have you noticed there's also a very dark red? If I'm not mistaken, the can says it will give you 52 bhp extra. I didn't take that one, because those 2 extra bhp were not worth the $$$ they aksed. If you went for the normal red, you'll be fine!

Oh dear. They were making FUN of you! They were pulling a prank on you!

I too find it difficult to believe you don't know the calipers are located in the trunk! Next to the intake, to be more precise!

They had a good laugh I guess...
