MX5 roof catch

Hi all :)



Long time, no post - but that's a good thing as it means nothing has gone wrong since I had to buy a new battery after the old one died. My lovely



1996 MX5 has just had its annual service and all that needed replacing was a wiper blade! :) But they told me that the driver's side roof catch wasn't closing properly and while it's not urgent, it should be replaced at some point. The Mazda dealer that did my service quoted £60 for the catch and said labour would be 20-30 minutes, so around £80 in all. Is this reasonable, or is this something I can do much cheaper myself, bearing in mind I'm not great with working on cars.

I googled this group for an answer and had a quick look at miata.net but didn't find a lot, but sorry if I'm asking an obvious/common question.

Did you check the TSB on miata.net about the out-of-spec machining of some 1996 soft tops?

Depending on how you value your time, getting the roof catch (striker unit?) from a junk yard would obviously be cheaper. If it is the striker unit, you will also need to buy/borrow/ rent a torx screw driver. Don't try a phillips. Should be straightforward to replace, I would think. If it is the clamp, you may also need to adjust its tension by flipping open the plastic cover above the tension nut.

Thinking about it, given the time it would take to hunt down a part, go get it and then fit it, it would work out better for me to work the same amount of time and pay the mechanic to fix it, I think. Thanks again for your help, always appreciated.
