Protege Timing Belt

Are these the same basic engine as in a Miata? '91. How long should it take to change one? Flat rate book says 2.0, but who knows how real that is for self work. Does broken belt mean bent valves on this engine? Google found me a thread from here that says broken belt doesn't mean bent valves on a Miata. A howto URL would be nice, but I guess it wouldn't be quite the same for the sideways engine. Google found me no howto on miata.net for one. This belt broke, so I'll need to know how to realign crank and camshaft. Would water pump change at same time be good idea? How long do they last?

TIA

I *think* the 91 Protege engine is very similar, but see for yourself at:

A water pump change would be a very good idea. Two hours would be flying for someone who had done it several times before, not to mention the extra water pump work.

I've done the 1.5L twice (97 and 98). It's actually easier than the Miata as there are only two wheels involved; the crankshaft and one for the overhead valves. There is a chain linking the two cams that you don't have to mess with. It's a little more cramped; the engine is sideways. You have to prop up the engine, remove and re-install the top engine mount.

It's quite easy.
