2000 E320 Check Engine Light

My "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on for a few days, then goes off. Any suggestions on how to diagnose? Gas cap is on fine (dealer suggested to check this).

I hate idiot lights, you'd think a bit more information could be presented to the driver.

You've got to read out what trouble codes are being generated by the computer. I don't know this first hand, but AJDalton7, one of the gurus on this newsgroup, says that Autozone will read out the trouble codes for free. I suppose with the idea that if you need a part, you would purchase it from them.
