E320 Keys

I'm bit confused about my Mercedes E320 keys. What actually allows the key to start the vehicle, I assumed it was a radio frequency signal from the key. Since the emergency key doesnt have a battery, how does that one start the car?

The infra red transmitter in the end of the key. It is powered by an inductive coil which picks up a signal transmitted by the ignition switch and converts it to electricity. RF is only used for locking/unlocking doors and boot
