Mercedes benz a class (1998) F fAULT GEARBOX

My A Class, Starts and the engine runs perfectly , However there is a F displayed, this does not change as you put in gear, it goes into gear but will not pulll away. It is a Auto/Manual Transmission, could it be the oil levels in the seperate oil reservoir for the transmission, not being correct. There was no noise or anything, i reversed OK, Then went to move forward and it would not move

Did you manage to get to the root of this problem? Mine has just done exactly the same thing this morning and is currently with a MB specialist....fluid levels seem ok and they are talking about taking the gearbox out. Any further info would be most welcome! regards Graham

I?ve had the car for nearly six years (not from new) and it?s been fine apart from new anti-roll bushes (I think) when under warranty. It?s now just passed the 100, 000 miles and no other problems apart from normal service items. It had this ?F? fault about 40,000 back but it disappeared when I shut the engine off and restareted - hasn?t happened agaian until now. Have been reading that it could be a Selector Unit fault in that it supplies fluid at the wrong pressure, causing first gear to spin. We?ll see....it?s in with MB specialist who is going to renew the fluid and filter as a first step

If the problem goes away once you shut the engine off.... then the same problem comes back later.... the car goes into 'Limp Home Mode'. One forward gear, usually third or 4th plus reverse. This is the car trying to tell you something is wrong. An authorised MB dealer should be able to diagnose (with a computer) the problem and extract fault codes to tell you what is wrong.

AM told by a MB Specialist (after diagnostics) that it is the ECU withing the gearbox. THis will cost £1045 inc vat (part included is £700). I am due to pick it up on Wednesday and will keep posting here on progress
