Lucky here! In New Zealand insurance is not compulsory and is cheap for people who is over 25. I only paid $1300 (~400 pounds) a year and $550 excess.

Many years ago, I studied in U of London bought a second hand 1993 BMW 323, the insurance cost more than it's price :(

What do you mean, insurance is not compulsory? None at all? Not even third party?

You are right. You can drive a car on New Zealand road without any insurance covered. We have plenty of roads and only little traffic jam everyday, but most people here drives very rough and impatient. I got my driver license in East London UK 15 yesrs ago. I dare say more than 70% of driver here would fail the test in London.

A friend of mind's C-class with only 3-party got hit by a pacific islander who's car was not insured at all. The tribunal ordered the pacific islander to pay him $5 per week until he paid off the bill. Whats the point to go to knock on the door to collect $20 a month.

I hope the government should revise the legislation to make it be compulsory (at least 3rd party).

Most people around the world don't understand how New Zealand's system works. We have legal system and procedure but we don't have punishment.
