998 Engine Rebuild

Does anybody know someone in ME, NH, MA area that could help me with a

998 engine/transmission rebuild on my 1974 Austin Mini? I would like to learn along the way. My experience is with V-8 small block Fords. Gracias.

I would start with a repair manual, either from a library, car booty, or mail order, if you know V8 engines, then you are 80% there, afterall its half a V8 with a load of gears in the bottom, although "A" series engines are very basic and easy to work on, there are a few little tricky bits that are highlighted in the manuals, along with some good tips, HTH Fitzy

I'm about to do the same on my '73 Clubman. I want a basically standard engine but since the exhaust and intake manifold, the carburetter and fuel pump are missing, I thought I might give it a little tweek like polishing the ports and fitting hardened valve seats and maybe oversize valves if they need replacing, extractors and a 1 1/2" SU with bigger needle/jet. Any thoughts on this? Graham

It is a basic simple engine a good hand book and you should be OK. I have rebuilt a few A series engine back in the 70s and recently over the last couple of years. You will need a couple of specialist tools namely a flywheel puller and a large socket to fit the flywheel bolt. They should not be too expensive mail order.

Bore to +60 will give you around 1150cc. (You will get a final bore of

+80 with the newly released pistons). Always fit a new oil pump and rocker shaft and convert to a duplex chain.

valve seats good = unleaded fuel

dont bother with the port-polishing.

get a *good* exhaust system; i like the RC-40 with a maniflow manifold (headers in US?) use the smallest bore system you can find, if its a stanndard head/cam/valve size

you will need a separate intake manifold.

finish it with a diffrent needle to make this modification work.

have a look here:

Thanks, Keith, that is what I had in mind. Any idea which needle and jet they use in the stage 1 kit?

Get on to Fabre in Sydney 02 97581966 - they can sort you a needle - just tell them what you have done - very little difference in the jetting with what you propose. BTW they also keep mini parts to OHaul your motor.

if you look down through the link i sent you to Minispares, the needle they reccomend is AAU, which is a nice flat profile. (richer than standard at top end, where the exhaust mods really come in to play)
