1991 isubishi Miage Transmission

I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Mirage with 38,000 miles on it. It developed a transmission problem which was intermittent at first but now is permeate.

When shifted to reverse the car will shift with large jerking action. When placed in Drive it will start out in what seems to be second gear. Moving the gear shift will not enable any other gear except reverse. The overdrive button has not affect as well.

When the symptoms were intermittent it would start out with the problem and then all of a sudden work properly; and then all of sudden go back into the problem mode again.

The fluid is full and seems ok.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks

I'd start with a simple transmission fluid and filter change. Even though it is just 38K miles, the fluid is old and worn out after 16 years. Drop the pan and clean it thoroughly and you will be amazed at the crud there. Make sure you replace the filter and only use the recommended fluid. (This is critical) If this does nothing, then get the transmission computer scanned by a competent trans shop that has experience with Mitsubishi automatic transmissions. It might be a simple sensor that has failed and the fail safe is to go into limp (2nd gear) home mode. It also may require a complete rebuild as well and only the computer dump of the trouble codes and internal monitoring will tell. Go to someplace you trust since there are places that will not do anything and tell you it needs to be rebuilt for $2K.

Good luck and post your experience for others to benefit from...
