Corsa 1.8 SRi

I have traction control.

My right foot.

The left sometimes helps, too.

What ... like you've just pulled out on a roundabout and realised that bmw coming round towards you is going very fast.

I'd say 0-20mph is of more use in the modern world.

For instance ... if you are in unfamilier territory and you realise you want the next turning on the left, even though you are waiting at lights in the right hand lane of a dual carriageway ... you want to out drag the car beside you, have time to indicate for a few seconds, then move across to the left hand lane.

Far, far more safer than putting the indicator on and hoping someone is going to let you move across. (Cue visions of elderly person stopping in right hand lane looking for a gap from behind ready to move across).

I still say the corsa is underpowered and overweight.

Can the 1.8 corsa do 0-100mph in 17 seconds though???

106 Rallye 1.3 100bhp as well, but all very peaky (not counting the Daihatsu because its Turbo'd). The Corsa would feel quicker than all of them.

I *am* knocking the traction control. It's utter, abominable shit.

Bully for you, I drive a 2.5 Vectra :)

I find that hard to believe, given that (prior to the new Astra, which apparently has a very good traction system) Vauxhall TC is not ESP, it will merely just cut the power pretty much dead when the wheels slip. It won't be triggered in normal or even enthusiastic driving.

Maybe you're thinking of anti-lock brakes[1] ?

Eh? Common sense or acceleration sense will do this much better on something like a 2.2 Vectra.

And if they're not quick enough, could they maintain some of the original body shape if hit by the BMW?

Er, what ?

My 200bhp 2.0 16v Turbo car can only manage to do it in 7 seconds !

If it really can crack 60mph in 8 seconds (I suspect it cannot) then it's doing very well indeed with little-over 100bhp !

It's not.

Agreed.

Time-taken-to-overtake is by FAR the most useful performance figure these days !

Either he'll have to slow down (cos he's going TOO fast) or you just pulled out in front of him.

Either way, the lack of 0-20mph performance, isn't the problem !

Except that is hardly an everyday occurence ! I can count on one hand, the number of times I've been in that situation.

Anyhow, you can hardly "out drag the car beside you" when there is traffic in front - you'd just plow right into the back of the car ahead !

Agreed. However, pretty much anything with a measly 115bhp is gonna be underpowered and overweight !

Huh ?

NONE of them even NEARLY compare to the current Corsa ! It's a whole two generations newer (weight, comfort, safety) FFS !

Not a chance.

Yeah, like my 2.0 Carlton. Imagine 115bhp in that big 'ole thing.

Though it really wasn't terrible power wise once you got going. And it took a lot of stick. When I went up to buy my Audi, I'd been up a couple of weeks before to look at it (and ended up giving a deposit), and took exactly

2 hours (possibly a fraction under) to get there (Lowdham, near Nottingham) from Bracknell in my mate's MR2 Roadster (not a desperately quick car, but we were going pretty quick). Then when we went to pick it up I took the Carlton up and thought "might take a bit longer in this". Then I thought "no it won't you muppet, this isn't a 1.1 Fiesta, it'll still sit at 100 happily enough". It took a shade under 2 hours.

I wonder how much overtaking happens these days? On the sort of road we're presumably talking about.

Nor can my 3.0 litre beemer!!! But my other car with 69bhp less can, due to the laws of physics.

I usually overtake plenty of times on every trip I make.

So do i ... much to the annoyance of these guys in hgv's who travel with a gap of 25 feet between each other. (As seen everyday by most of us drivers who actaully leave our home towns).

A 12 foot citroen ax fits quite nicely in those tight gaps. And no more dangerous than countless other situations seen on todays roads.

Yep. I rekon less than 10% of my driving is done within town - it's almost all on A and B roads.
