Fast estate cars for small money.

Due to business expansion and the Rangie still having a dead gearbox, I'm on the look-out for a quick, large, cheap estate car to replace the Golf.

Budget is whatever I can get for the Golf or possibly a swap, I don't really want to have to put money towards the change.

Stuff I'm looking for is as follows (all estates)

Granada 2.9 24v Omega 3.0 Mondeo 2.5 Volvo T5 Mk2 Granada 2.8i Mercedes 280 / 300 / 320 Sierra 2.8 / 2.9 Ghia 4x4 BMW 530i Touring (although not really big or cheap enough) Subaru Legacy Turbo

Insurance and fuel costs aren't an issue, being quick, big and reliable would all be good.

I don't mind having to do a bit of work on whatever, but obviously I'm not in the mood for rebuilding something, just need something that'll work hard and go well.

Anyone got any other suggestions for quick estates for sensible money?

No, but my parents have a Mondeo 2.5 estate. It's never broken. It's *NOT* fast though by any stretch of the imagination heh.

How expensive are the big engined older volvos? 960, etc. Not as fast as the T5 maybe, but comparable to some of the other stuff you've mentioned.

cheers, clive

My uncle's got a 2.3 turbo (IIRC). It's dog slow, and it's a horrible car to be in. Almost the same interior as my B reg 340 had.

I knocked back a 960 3.0 24v with LPG for £500.

Nice enough car, but I have bad memories of a 760 GLE I owned.

It's broken then. I had a one and it was fast enough to keep up with hot hatches and though the trim was old fashioned it was still comfy.

By "quick" I mean 0-60 in less than 9 seconds and capable of 120+

It'll be doing quite a few runs to and from CZ and I don't want to be lumbered with some piece of shit that takes 30 seconds to get back up to speed if it drops below 60.

If I wanted something slow and 'orrible, I'd buy a diesel.

Mitsubishi Legnum VR4?

I feel I'm repeating myself.

Can't find one for a grand, otherwise yeah.

I know someone who's got one, he rates it, but it doesn't seem to be /that/ reliable. The silly electrically controlled shock absorbers seem to have a mind of their own. Mitsubishi can't fix it...

Mine would do that easily though it may have been tweaked slightly before I got it. My 200sx didn't feel that much faster as standard.

define 'fast' - I thought the V6 was good for less than 8 seconds. quick enough for an estate....

ST200 would do the job.....

If it's a Mondeo V6 Auto, it'll be an utter slug. The auto boxes in Mk1 and Mk2 Mondeos are truly awful things.

Find me someone who wants to swap one for my Golf and I'll do it!!

No, find me an ST220..

Keep your eyes open for a Carlton 3L 24v Diamond Estate. 240bhp + RWD = Stonking fun, especially in the wet. Same lump as the big senators. Forget the Omega. They are truly s**te. Old now admittedly, but old codgers seemed to love them and low miler K,L,M platers appear from time to time in mint cond ition for

I know the 940 2.3T is good for > 120, based on what somebody I know got banned doing...

Dunno about the acceleration though, and it is a bit of a barge.

Any audi avants fit the bill? Did they do a v6?

And I notice you mentioned a MK2 2.8i Granada - are they actually that fast?

cheers, clive

Um, no. They're 0-60 in around 9.5 and 118 top speed, but I like 'em.

Besides, I know how to put proper engines in 'em.

I know all about the Carlton Diamond. Astrayvanman quite often rings me to ask questions about 'em. I'd have one but they're pretty rare nowadays.

A 328i touring would be acceptable, but they're out of my price range and as you know I'm not a big BMW fan - I know I listed the 530i Touring, but that's only because I know where there's loads of bits for one.

Bad form, but I've just sold an Audi A6 Avant V6 TDi.

I'd quite like a 100 Avant 2.8 Quattro, or even a 200 Avant Quattro... Oooooh...

Rare agreed. But well worth a look if you find one. Cheap as chips to maintain too. Only downside is as you know I'm not a big BMW fan - I know I listed the 530i Touring, but

The e34 530i Touring (M30 6cyl engine) is a *fantastic* old beast. Not too rapid on acccelration, but you don't have to slow for any corners. they really do handle that well. The 530i V8 is one to avoid unless you *know* its had a replacment alusil block. Many did. The ones that are still alive that is.

Go for the 530i. You won't regret it. You certainly won;t lose money on it.

What about a 9000 FTP CSE.

You can fit a double wardrobe into one of them.
