HEHE what a noise!

Apart from the missing 8 valves, that it.

Let's face it, 150bhp from a N/A 8 valve 2lt is pretty good going.

OK- the 16v in the GTV didn't improve on that - and the 2nd set of plugs was more to do with heritage than anything else. But you've got to give credit to the Alfa engineers for the older lumps.

Yup.

And of course, the noise - although the BMW 2.0 flat six sounds great, too, and the VTECs have a certain charm about their sound (if you like that sort of thing).

It's such a shame Alfa didn't bolt a 16v head to the older lump. I'd have preferred the chain-driven lump to the Fiat-based junk they used instead :-(

Oh yes. The noise. I can often be seen driving with the window open just to take in the noise ;-)

Got a link for the Beemer flat-6 - I've got a thing about 'boxer' engines.

Heh heh heh!

They have a certain charm about their noise - have you ever listened to a Corsa 1.0 with a big bore exhaust on it? Sounds a bit boxer-ish. ;)

Hello DervMan.

How many of them were 8v? BMW have very little torque below 4500 rpm unlike Alfas

- I drove both, my mates have them. And BMW is a 24 valve inline 6 (4 valves per cylinder).

16v generally don't have low end, 8v do.

ABF is a great engine - I'm looking for a Mk3 Golf with one, but still it's 16v.

See above.

odd also how the new, single spark, 2.0JTS engine produces (from memory)

165ps...

hmmm - never driven a BMW with a flat six, driven plenty with an in-line six though.

My mistake. I usually quote BMW six bangers incorrectly!

That's what puzzled me - I assumed it was something from way back in time.

A google reveals nothing, though.

See up there.......

He was talking about the old 8v lump. But this was never fitted to the GTV.

The 16v lumps were OK for their time - but time has moved on. Hence the new JTS engine.

Sort of 'not of this world' noise?

the plugs I quoted for are platinum and are listed as the replacements for alfa ts.

Theo made the world a better place for us by saying..

So you can judge how s**te an engine is by how much the plugs cost?

They are indeed overpriced. However a set of Beru Silverstones (4xS7 and 4xS3F) do the job very well and cost about a half of that.

120quid for a set of four for my old Volvo S40.

Surely you'd be better off with some aftermarket ones ?

I got a set of Denso Iridium's from eBay for about £22 last year.

They're inline, not boxer.

I was. And I did. Just shows the way dealers try and rip off those who aren't awake at service time.
