I miss my turbocharger!

Just helped a friend relocate from York to Norwich (poaching staff from my old place, mwahahahaha!), so hired a hicube long wheelbase 3.5t twin rear axel van thing for the long weekend.

Sadly, it wasn't a Transit, but a LDV Convoy. There's nothing wrong with LDVs, I suppose, but I prefer Transits. But at least it had the 90 PS 2.4 Duratorq engine!

And it's reminded me of a few things. LDV doesn't know what "sound insulation" is so you get to hear everything happening in the engine bay - the diesel rattle under very slight load, the whine of the turbocharger spooling up, the hissing of the turbocharger, and the combination of a whoosh and a rumble under full power. :) Wish Kermit could make these noises when I wanted him to (and not when I just wanted to get home, heh).

I suppose an average of 31 mpg over almost 900 miles means I wasn't driving it fast enough! ;)

Stop crying and get a nice Mondeo Ghia X TDCI :) Then remove the sound insulation so you can hear it better

eeeeeeeeeeeew! I hate LDVs!!! Got a couple at work and they're so unstable and uncomfortable to drive (down country roads/ windy A roads that is though). The transits are far superior in every respect!

They are. Now vans are not notable for their handling, well except for the Transit. These modern front wheel drive Transits are quite chuckable in a "people carrier" way . . . the LDV is kinda . . . well pants.

Still, it was possible to get oversteer if you were being really silly!

Isn't the Transit-sized LDV nothing but a tarted up Sherpa, though?

In which case, you can see why it'd be s**te.

I know they're not noted for handling (although transits grip very very well), but even on a slightly windy a road they feel horrible (the LDV is 52 reg), and the steering needs constand adjustments. My dad's Peugeot Partner felt much better (an n reg one) and the Transits feel much better again (52 reg). In fact i do enjoy driving the transits (and they have a stereo as well!). Managed to get them sideways before on roundabouts too (these are RWD) :)

Now a Mercedes Sprinter - i would love a go in one of those!

More than likely, it just has a modern engine!

Indeedy!

It doesn't help that I'm going from the Ka, which responds instantly to steering input, but it's a case of shouting, "hard-a-port" and waiting the requisite fourteen seconds before the steering rack replies with, "hard-a-port, aie aie sir" and the wheels begin turning.

Very keen to follow the HGV sunken bits, mainly because you're constantly adjusting . . .

This van has a stereo with 88 buttons on it, so it's downright impossible to use!

They're RWD fun! :)

We've got some new fwd TD transits at work. They're very quick, but the handling is pants compared to the old rwd ones.

Few years ago I had the fun experience of having to order a "Big fast van that isn't a Luton, for under £30 grand" for my own use. Sprinter 3.0 TurboDiesel ( P732 MMA ) Air Con, ABS, T/C, CD player, Remote Central Locking and all the toys.

First, and probably last time I've ever managed to make a van do 120 MPH with two pallets in the back.

Absolute monster.. I'm actually tempted to throw in an offer for the thing when it's due to retire.

What sort of power/torque do they make? Are the newest ones any differnet?

I saw a 03 reg Sprinter MWB and it had 'CDI 316' on it. If MB are still using the same nomenclature this would mean it was 160bhp. Think they are 5 cylinder, obviously common rail.

I just got a new Vectra SRi 2.0 Turbo. Great turbo sounds, but only with the windows open! Just shows how effective cabin insulation is these days.
