He sold his Celica 'cos it was too expensive to run, so I *really* can't see this project getting beyond the 'maybe one day' stage ;-)

You can't get parts even for a 92, because VAG have withdrawn all parts. It doesn't happen now, because there are so few left. But on the Skoda website they used to have a timelime of the company. It had the original Octavia/Felicia/Superb, the S100/1000/110R cars, then jumped the Felicia (first VAG involment), Octavia (first VAG platform car), Fabia and Superb. They even erased it from the company history, even though it is still the most popular car to own in CZ (the Estelle/Rapid/Garde). Second most popular is the Favorit, again not mentioned.

Dealers who wouldn't sell up their small family type workshop/forcourts that they may have run for 20 years and sold well, to go into debt with big glass VW style showrooms and computer systems lost their franchise. They were threatened with losing it if they continued to support the old cars too, although VW did still provide parts for Favorit.

Parts support and blurring the history is understandable, but I'm not convinced that VW 'ordered' dealers to scrap the cars - more than likely that they scrapped them as they were worthless. They couldn't sell them from the forecourt, usual traders wouldn't want them, and auctions were more expensive than scrapping.

That's more than likely the real reason.

I should imagine so, yeah. I think the tank engines that are similar to the deltic things can run on pretty much anything, so I shouldn't think it would be a problem to get a deltic to run on chip fat.

They were even told to find a locally available used Favorit for owners=20 who needed expensive repairs, no matter how mint the rest of the car=20 was, and do them the favorit at the price of the repair, than actually=20 fix the car and keep it on the road (favorits had been arround about 4=20 years by then) as they tried to clear off the last die hards.

That was why Butts of Bawtry and S4 specialised in buying parts direct=20 from CZ where they daren't pull the spares source. Every family still=20 owns at least one Estelle/Rapid or MK1 carb Favorit. If it can survive=20 in CZ in such number, what made them disolve so quick here. The steel=20 was very thick and very well undersealed. Corossion only got to them in=20 very limited places, and it was fixable for about =A3100 for both sides if= =20 needed.

Dunno mate. Always said to myself I wasn't going to pass my car test until I could afford the car I've always wanted. That was always going to be either an E-type, or a hotrod. I compromised. Big mistake and I've never forgiven myself. I've got 3 years until I'm 40. Should be enough time to put something together even if it is a stock colour resto rod, rather than a Boyd Coddington show pony.

In all honesty - if VW was your brand and you were trying to re-invent Skoda to sell to the masses - would you really want people being constantly reminded of its questionable past by seeing what they used to churn out...

In that case take out a big loan and get one that has already been done and just needs a little bit of finishing off. Building or restoring a car from scratch is a huge job and very expensive. Don't expect change out of 10,000 quid. I know. I've done 2 of them and that's enough.

I went in an Ambassador taxi when I visited india not long since. It was cool, especially the way a crack opened up on the floor when accelerating, then closed up with a loud crack when braking.

Nowt questionable about having the captive market back home in CZ, and still being popular in the rest of europe, and being the import of choice in Romania, and in former russian satellite states. Sure those with money are bringing in Mercs, Beemers and VWs, plus the other occasional jap car, but compared to Dacia/FSO/Lada, Skodas were in the luxury car market. Romanians would wait 10 years for a good used Skoda

120L, rather than wait 5 years for a new Dacia from the government (5 years after they had saved the money to order it). They prefered the engineering quality, build quality and performance of Skoda over what was available (eventually) locally.

I did actually consider doing that, although not with an ambassador. Iran is probably slightly safer route than the various 'stans, although possibly less interesting...
