I want to build a proper hotrod.

Need to think what to use as the base though. Much as I like the 30's ford coupes there are too many. Moggy minors and ford pops and anglias have been done to death.
And I can't think what else to do. I fancy building something Phat in 40's style, rather than a stripped down 30's coupe rod. Don't want something totally chopped and chanelled like a leadsled, too many amazons and p5coupes have been sacrificed for that. I did think about a Volvo PV544 slammed on modern volvo running gear, but in the UK they are pretty damned rare.
Anyone got any ideas for something that would look pretty cool slammed in miledeep glass black, but isn't popular with the classic restorers yet.

How about a London Taxi ?
Plenty of rust free examples about, easy V8 swap, RWD and a chassis so you can do what you want to the body.

Often though about it, but something doesn't quite work shape wise for me. And Bez from the Happy Mondays/Blackgrape has a pretty silly one, with a monster sound system, as does I think Steven Fry for when he is in the city.

What about Saab 99 or a Estelle, I would have thought that was more up your street, tho finding something interesting that is not as rotten as a carrot is going to be difficult.
How about making a spaceframe then some GRP panels, you could then use nice modern running gear.

Back to the cool cars thread then ;-)

Too few of each of them arround to butcher up. And converting a 99 to RWD would take too much work.
I like the idea of swedish safe and rwd hance mentioning a PV544 Volvo before. Although I have a feeling that an amazon might not be so bad to play with.

That is going to be the case with any car of that vintage that is not a total wreck.

Yeah, but some you don't feel so bad about. The Estelle and Rapid, because of VW's commitment to scrap as many as possible, have less than 100 left registered and taxed on the road ATM. Considering they were sold from about 1976 until 1992, that isn't many left at all for what is essentially a modern car.

This all sounds a bit urban legend, to be fair.
They've probably all gone because they were a bit shit, worth feck all and also rot prone.

You can't get parts even for a 92, because VAG have withdrawn all parts. It doesn't happen now, because there are so few left. But on the Skoda website they used to have a timelime of the company. It had the original Octavia/Felicia/Superb, the S100/1000/110R cars, then jumped the Felicia (first VAG involment), Octavia (first VAG platform car), Fabia and Superb. They even erased it from the company history, even though it is still the most popular car to own in CZ (the Estelle/Rapid/Garde). Second most popular is the Favorit, again not mentioned.
Dealers who wouldn't sell up their small family type workshop/forcourts that they may have run for 20 years and sold well, to go into debt with big glass VW style showrooms and computer systems lost their franchise. They were threatened with losing it if they continued to support the old cars too, although VW did still provide parts for Favorit.

Parts support and blurring the history is understandable, but I'm not convinced that VW 'ordered' dealers to scrap the cars - more than likely that they scrapped them as they were worthless. They couldn't sell them from the forecourt, usual traders wouldn't want them, and auctions were more expensive than scrapping.
That's more than likely the real reason.

They were even told to find a locally available used Favorit for owners who needed expensive repairs, no matter how mint the rest of the car was, and do them the favorit at the price of the repair, than actually fix the car and keep it on the road (favorits had been arround about 4 years by then) as they tried to clear off the last die hards.
That was why Butts of Bawtry and S4 specialised in buying parts direct from CZ where they daren't pull the spares source. Every family still owns at least one Estelle/Rapid or MK1 carb Favorit. If it can survive in CZ in such number, what made them disolve so quick here. The steel was very thick and very well undersealed. Corossion only got to them in very limited places, and it was fixable for about 100 for both sides if needed. -- Carl Robson Car PC Build starts again. http://smallr.com/rz Homepage: http://www.bouncing-czechs.com

In all honesty - if VW was your brand and you were trying to re-invent Skoda to sell to the masses - would you really want people being constantly reminded of its questionable past by seeing what they used to churn out...

Nowt questionable about having the captive market back home in CZ, and still being popular in the rest of europe, and being the import of choice in Romania, and in former russian satellite states. Sure those with money are bringing in Mercs, Beemers and VWs, plus the other occasional jap car, but compared to Dacia/FSO/Lada, Skodas were in the luxury car market. Romanians would wait 10 years for a good used Skoda 120L, rather than wait 5 years for a new Dacia from the government (5 years after they had saved the money to order it). They prefered the engineering quality, build quality and performance of Skoda over what was available (eventually) locally.

Not really, seeing as what they "churned out" were cars that were better than their direct competition...

In CZ they had no competition. But free trade within the soviet union made them the leading edge for mass cars.
Tatra were the state car luxury maker, Skoda were for the people. They competed with Lada, FSO, Dacia. They did fish their steel out of scuttle WW2 russian subs like Lada and FSO, they rolled it from fresh stock.

Them's the baddies I meant :)
Polonez Prima... *shudder*
Always liked the Estelle, learnt to drive in one. Boring Corolla by day (family run driving school), then the Estelle 120 at night round at a mate's farm.
Perhaps it was the combination of RWD + muddy fields that influences my memories most though... :)

I really miss mine. Of all the cars I've had, I really do think my messed with Estelle actually handled best. Others will doubt it is possible, but I think it is true. It wasn't standard but few of my crs have been.

I wanted to do something fatter and less fins. Like a Willys Coupe, but not so obvious. Minors have been done that way, seen a couple Volvo PV544's from Sweden (common as shit there). Wanted more 40's than 50's style.
