However, it will shatter when it finally comes to a stop. As will the Vauxhall.
It's very easy to make things go fast. It just takes energy. It's hard to make them stop and MUCH harder to make them turn corners when they are going fast.

It wont reduce times by much and the increased final drive will actually help to put the power down as less torque gets delivered to the wheels but up to a higher speed. If it effected its quarter mile terminal speed by more than a few mph I would be amazed but it could ad say half a sec max to the time.
But it was a mclaren, and I was on a bike with low power to weight compared to the vauxhall!
Because both have a similar top speed potential but the vauxhall has much much better power to weight! It will accelerate TWICE as hard.
With the correct gearing of course it can do it.
Flat out it is. It has the power to weight of a moped with a fat bloke on it. The Vauxhall has about ten times that power to weight and double the veyron.

Its a slow low powered car. Put the veyron on the drag strip compare that to the vauxhall and you will see that its just driving off going on a shopping run.. Its a different world of performance.
We cant. But why not? My V8 nitrous sierra (was an old reps 1.6) with knackered suspension and Colway 205 60 13 remoulds would go 150 for mile after mile. Whats another few mph?
I dont think he quite gets how powerful and how hard this thing lauches and goes! Its accellerating harder at 150 than the veyron can off the line! May I suggest a trip to the drag strip and watch a few pro mods go. They run the same sort of times. Once you have had your idea of power recalibrated you will just see a veyron as a low powered streamlined car that does its 250 due only to good aerodynamics and a long 2 plus mile run up.
In your mind it seems to. Its really not a problem! It might not be as good as a veyron but that does not make it dangerous or unstable.
The vauxhall would absolutely murder the veyron under ANY speed range acceleration. Gearing allowing of course.

- does the Vauxhall stays aerodynamical stable at sustained high speeds
- is the Vauxhall mechanically strong enough to cope over a longer periode of time with the forces induced by its topspeed?
- how many minutes will his engine be able to produced 2200 HP? How accurate are the 2200 ponies?
- how many minutes can he drive (fuelwise) at WOT?
- how do his tires cope on a longer run? (remember the Hamster)
The Veyron stays something completely different. If you step in the Veyron, turn the key, you can drive from London to Monaco only stopping for fuel and the human inconveniants of such a journee. When starting form London I would be very surprised if the dragster got to the ferry under his own steam (that being not on the back of a recovery truck) Maybe something for next year Top Gear?
However: the streetlegal dragster is still a mayor achievement. I like people who build something possibly lethal and then go to the limit with it.

No reason why not. Many drag cars go faster and are the same shape.

That is not what I ment: the car travelles at 200 Mph and is blown off line by a gust of wind. What happens? Or the car travelles at 200 mph and hits a bump. Does it take off?

Then you think an endurance car is no different to a sprint car? A hillclimb-specific engine (a run takes about 60 sec) nothing diffent to a drag racer?
Last time I looked engines on dragsters weren't even that reliable in the sense that the real dragsters suffer regulary engine problems. It is just becasue the engine are but for 6-15 sec at full power that they survive, idem for transmissions.
I think that 1 minute or 60 seconds, will be allready a very very good estimation.
It doesn't do 300 miles on full power, never has but OK : 15 miles it is. At WOT the 15 miles are gone in 4 min 30... That if the fuel cell is standard which I doubt a lot.
Once again: there is a major difference between hitting topspeed a fraction of a second and then backing off compared to hitting topspeed and staying there.
The latter I know only from planes and there too engine life goes down in dramatic fashion, fuel and oil consumption go just the opposite.
Just to put it perspectif: 75% of the cost of the Veyron is justified because the car must remain safe at speeds above 200 mph.

You like drama dont you. No 200 isnt that fast. I have been on turbo streetbikes that can do that. It does not feel any faster than 150 or 170. Just numbers. Many cars at many events are severely modified and do these speeds. Even my old V8 sierra tow car would do 150 with its ye olde knackered 1.6L suspension. It had Colway 205/60/13 REMOULDS on which were supposed to be safe to 70... It was completely stable and no problem. Used to throw chunks of tread off occassionally but what do you expect...
You are only talking about another 33% I may have splashed out on some proper tyres for that! But that car would also have been fine with anothr third more speed.
In the main no. Maybe a few percent of mixture and a degree on timing, a fraction more or less boost. If it runs on a quarter without breaking then there shouldnt be a problem. Obviously the further you go even in a shopping trolly the greater likelyhood of something failing.
No its because top fuel engines are very unpredictable and do all kinds of evil things. But we are talking about a 2000bhp engine not a 5 or 6 thousand bhp bomb. They are physically on the borderline of strength. They are an explosion waiting to happen. We are talking about a road car.
Many pro mods make this much power and run several seasons on a single engine.
No since its a road car its probably bigger... It easily could be if it was. But I suspect there isnt anywhere you could go 250mph for four and a half mins anyway!

Sure: I raced a Bridgestone tire which was safe to 16 mph (a garden tractot tire). When I complained (modestly) about vibrations the Bridgestone people asked what speeds I drove, went white and refused to sell me the tires again...

I like that, a lot even only I have never met a serious competitor which did several seasons on 1 engine and very few who did 1 season on an engine. I never have...
But then I have neven been in dragracing nor raced 2200 HP-engines.
Where is the logic in it being bigger? Because it is a roadcar? It does a max of 1000 miles a year on the roads and I guess that allready overstated.
The tank in that car is sufficient for a 1/4 mile powerrun and getting back.
When the dragster comes in, the owner checks transmission, tires, the lot. On hour of driving and 7 hours of checking / rebuilding etc.
The Veyron is parked after an hour driving, most likely before a expensif restaurant...

If the bloke with the dragster kills himself, it is too bad for him. If a Veyron flips over at 200 mph, then VW is sued. Most owners of a Veyron have the capabilities of sueing the kind like VW very succesfully.

As previously noted, and as is obvious in a short burst race, obviously the Vauxhall will cover the first 1/4 mile first.
What's been somewhat lost here is my original premise was at what distance - with no traffic, will the Veyron pass the Vauxhall. The Vauxhall with street tires that will take sustained high speed and the gearing it has at the dragstrip.
The difference between 150 & 200-ish is enormous. Half the high school cooz cruisers in America will probably go 150 assuming their tires hold. I imagine the crowd thins out considerably in the 200mph club.
I get it, but I also think I have a sense of what it is what it isn't. For its class, it's quick over a short distance. That's what it's built for.

Drag isnt. It goes up with the square of the speed but what is stable at 150 is still stable at 300 unless there is a large lift component.
Its not common because they are engine guys but it happens often.

I meant to say 0 - 60 in 2.46 vs 150 - 210 in 2.46. Originally was comparing the 0 - 62 times of the Veyron which I've seen as 2.5 and mixed up my editing.
And if they go from a 150mph start, I hardly think the Vaux is going to emerge victorious. Even if it theoretically has the horsepower, that drag gearing and nature isn't going to allow it.
The owner's family would probably appreciate a nice floral arrangement at his funeral if he were stupid enough to try it.

On unknown gearing we cant know. with tall enough gearing though it will out accelerate the veyron at ALL SPEEDS.

No I suspect things like the suspension bottoming out due to exess downforce or the windscreen blowing in to be the first problems encountered if you push something fast enough. Seen it happen at long marston.

There is nothing "humourous" about the comparison.
Notably the speed at which it will leave the road trying to maintain speeds it isn't suited to maintain or the first time it tries to match that Veyron in negotiating a turn at speed.
