Lil Fiats

This is unfortunately very very true... and I second the recommendation of a Micra - their 16v 1 litre engines go pretty decently, faster than most other

1 litre engines of a similar age.

The 93 to 97 cars differ slightly to the 98-2003 - but with your budget perhaps a low-end 98 model is out of your price range, I'm not sure how much they go for.

My first car many years ago was in fact a micra 1995 model - it doesn't have much street cred for a guy, but for a girl it's cute and bubbly. Alls I can advise is that you perhaps go to autotrader and have a gander, and if you or someone you know have a good eye for cars, a private (not public!!!) car auction could be a good idea. Good luck.

I don't know what age the OP's sister happens to be, but I personally found TFTP was the only way to go for a sub-£500 car. Especially when you consider the unfortunate fact it's the insurance company who decide in the end the max they will give you for your old banger :-)

I would ignore ebay personally unless you have the time to go visiting different car owners. It's much easier to use local autotrader, car auctions, and private sales. That's not to say ebay isn't good value now and again, but for a first - very cheap - car, i would stik to the simple routes.

I've been checking all of them - there's been a few half decent things go through ebay, a few decent things in the local stuff, but not as many cars as when I looked a while back :( the good thing about ebay is that you can get a weeks free insurance which will give me time to get it home give it a service and drop it up to her!

Cinqs by now are well past their sell by date. The gearboxes will be knackered and the headgasket on its way out. And the fuel tank probably leaks. They're fun to drive when they're working though. Puntos based on the same mechanicals will be worse thanks to the extra weight they have to lug around. I've noticed a huge drop in the number of people representing Cinquecentos at Clubcento meets of late. Because the cars died and they couldn't find a good replacement Cinq.

Got to be a K10 Micra for a first car.

Just what he said. Though cinq sportings are great when in good fettle, they really were designed as throwaway cars, just don't last long term. Just another sign of modern ethos which is thrown at us constantly: "There's no need for a car to last, new is better" I particularly love the twisted environmental view that 's pushed so hard. Conveniently forgetting the wasted materials and energy used when a car is scrapped. Of course it has nothing to do with the persuasive powers of the manufacturers. Had a company 'new Focus' last week, very nice drive but will be totally shot in 6/7 yrs!

Not sure about the mk2 punto but the facelift mk3 I've bought for the girlfriend to drive around in is galvanised so at least the body should be in one piece in a few years

Obviously not as dedicated as classic car owners then.

Missus has the Sciecento Sporting, the build quality is crap, the handling is crap, the acceleration is crap, interior space is crap, totally embarrasing to drive.

On the whole, a great little car :-)

Well what did you expect of a car that doesn't exist?

You are quite right it appears to be a Sceicento Sporting, not a Sciecento Sporting,
