Mini review 2: New shape Mitsubishi Colt

Continuing the Mitsubishi theme...

Hired one of these in Tasmania as it was cheaper for three of us to fly and hire a car there than it was to take the V-Dub on the ferry. Which was fortuitous as the hills in Western Tassie were far to steep to be achieved in that old thing :)

Didn't like it at first. It has a column shift gearbox. The transmission is like a 50cc scooter. The revs just go up and down like it's slipping the clutch or something, felt very weird to drive and SWMBO thought the effect of it made her travel sick.

It was quite fun on the twisties, and there were several of those in Tasmania but I had to back off as SWMBO was about to throw up because of the gearbox! Very nice feel to the brakes.

Very economical thankfully as we risked getting stranded in the wilderness in torrential rain because the petrol station closed at 8pm and we missed it, but had to get over the mountains to the next town where we'd booked and pre-paid for accommodation. The Colt managed to run on fumes and get us there safely. We drove around pretty much the whole of Tasmania, including all those hills, on about a tank and a half of cheap Aussie 91 RON.

The three of us found the car comfortable. That gearbox made driving it very effortless to drive once we got used to it and it never seemed to be in the wrong ratio for bends or whatever.

I probably wouldn't buy one, but faced with the choice between that and the new Yaris, I'd have the Colt. But have you seen that crazy new i-Car? I thought the Colt was trying too hard to look futuristic...

You haven't got the hang of this yet have you?

Mini Reviews on here are typically of this ilk:

"Crap"

or if the writer is feeling wordy:

"Astonishingly Crap"

;)

Colts have traditionally been on the expensive side to insure over here despite not exactly being super hot hatches. That said I agree with taking it over a Yaris.
