New topic for Abo

Thought I might talk about some modifications and stuff.

I've just bought a new V8 lump for the Rover - nothing special it's just a

3.5 my mate had in his TR7 V8. But importantly it comes with twin SUs (and K&Ns), so my plan in the short term is to whack the SUs on the SD1 and ditch the awful Strombergs to hopefully get it running right, then possibly use the new lump as a basis for an engine build. My mates recently done the timing chain and gears, so I might just whip the heads off, have a nose about and put it all back together with a 4 barrel carb bolted on top. He's also giving me some tubular exhaust manifolds - no idea if they'll fit mine but it'd be nice if they did.

Along with a few services bits I've bought recently (dizzy cap, rotor arm, brake shoes etc etc) I'm hoping to have the car back on the road sometime in April. Will be nice to be able to drive it again, as I've missed that V8 loveliness.

I'm also very proud of my new Mota Lita steering wheel. Got it like this:

up and matching the rest of the interior!! Just got to get a matching centre cap and some shiney new bolts to finish it off. Basically I want to have the old boy running well (and looking good) for August because I've booked myself a spot on the SD1 Club display at the annual BMC/BL Rally in Peterborough. Then I've got another year to make it perfect (or as close as I can afford) when it will be serving as my wedding car :D

That is all

Sweet!

The Vee is booked on 2 stands this year - I have a couple of little tweaks I want to acheive as well :-)

IIRC TR7 V8 manifolds go very close to the cylinder block, but they /should/ fit. You'll probably have to do some fettling, but nothing too difficult.

*Don't* do much with the heads. The ports are already huge for what's needed, messing about making them bigger will just make it worse low end. My old Vitesse had a tuned lump, and the chap who'd done it had gone mental with valve sizes and porting it. Worked brilliantly top end, but the bottom end grunt was severely missing, even after a custom Mark Adams chip.

The Rangie is booked for the Woodvale Show in August. Hopefully the gearbox will last that long.

The only news on the Golf is that it is currently my Girlfriend's object of hate as it means I won't live anywhere without a garage...

If I could hook them up to the rest of the stainless steel system that would be great, and they may even release a few more ponies. If not I'm not fussed and will just put them on Ebay to make some of my money back!

I wont be doing anything like that. Just interested to see how it all works - never taken a pushrod engine apart before, let alone a V engine. If I can be bothered I'll just the heads off, clean them up, maybe a quick skim and put it all back together with new gaskets and seals just so I know it's all ok. Depends how quickly my project fund disappears!!

Thats the one thing that could screw up my plans. My gearbox is pretty noisy, but luckily since doing the remote linkage bushes it changes sweet as a nut. I'm just hoping it holds out for a bit longer!!

Hahaha, sounds familiar!! Luckily I ended up with a garage and a 4 car driveway :)

Scary indeed, especially the prices!!

BMC/BL = British Motor Corporation / British Leyland. So basically a day in a country park just outside Peterborough with lots of British cars (Rover, MG, Triumph, Austin, Jag, Morris and probably a few others too). It's about

20 mins from my girlfriends parents so seemed like a good day out and a chance to meet some of the SD1 Club people.

Heh when we got married Rachel's dad sorted out a Subaru WRC for her transport to the wedding. But in the end we didn't need it as we got married at a country hotel and everyone stayed there.

I reckon getting out of the co-driver seat with that dress on would have been interesting lol

Why not convert to Efi ?

Electronic ignition ?

Tut.

Bah, you don't /need/ the lump in a hurry, so it's obviously got to be EFi conversion, with double doses of megasquirt and megaspark, surely? Build a cheapy laptop and touch screen into the car for entertainments and on-the-fly tuning (switch between max performance and max economy maps as required...) and you have a pretty funky motor :-)

Who *doesn't* like blue leather though? Eh? Hmm? Tasty!

Yoiks. Well, since you clearly don't lack for bravery, you should really be looking at fitting a turbo and nitrous, surely?

Let us hope not.

I have considered it, but a big 4 barrel carb appeals to me more :)

Plus I can't solder for shit and I worry I'd never figure out the whole MS thing and end up with a complete mess of wires and an engine that doesnt work!

I thought a couple of drops of super glue would do the trick TBH. But yeah, maybe I'll put a nut on too.

Exactly. Blue velour seats, blue leather steering wheel - lovely jubbly

Well I'm waiting for Pete M to blow his gearbox again, then maybe he'll sell me his engine. And help me fit it. He's a friendly chap afterall!

For now...

We had considered the rally car option, but as you say there could be dress related issues. That's why the current plan is my Step Dads new C70 Convertiible for Nat and my SD1 for me and my crew (plus I want to sneak it into the wedding photos ;)). And one of our best mates said she could arrange some sort of big AMG Merc thing if we wanted it too. So many decisions!!
