Should the spool service be running even if you haven't installed a printer? I want to install a printer, and I'm getting various errors, including that the spool service isn't running when I choose to add a printer. I have a feeling I may have been overzealous in my process killing spree.

Well yes, if you want to add a printer. Try a reboot and reinstall your printer. Any processes you murdered will spring back to life once the system restarts....unless you've disabled the services?
Of course I've disabled them. Fixed them too. net start spooler chucked some nice errors.

Should work once it's been enabled. You may have a bunch of odd prints with nowhere to go already, use print manager to delete them if there are any. Go into services to make sure it's *really enabled.

Oh, and make sure any dependencies are started too. RPC?
I always disable the uesless Services I know I'm not going to use (such as Messenger, Windows Firewall, Task Scheduler, Remote Registry, Themes, etc).
Performance isn't really the issue, if I don't need something to be running in the background, then why leave it there for it to be compromised or draw resources.
That said, I'm not daft enough to disable the spooler service though :)
