there a monster compared to a MK1 and they get a pretty decent time standard. a tuned one on the other hand :)

A Fiesta XR2i is very fast compared to a Fiesta 1.1 but I still wouldn't call it a monster. I'd hardly call 14.7 seconds a decent time and even mildly modified ones aren't that much faster, they're still too heavy. Did Toyota make the body panels out of lead? For what's meant to be a 2 seat sports car 1300kg+ wet weight is seriously heavy. That's more than my Sunny GTI-R weighed and it had 4 seats and a very heavy 4wd system.

Anything's possible if you throw enough money at it but was it still road legal?

My 2001 (ie, it has some semblence of crash-protection) 406 Coupe has every conceivable weight-gaining extra and safety-system, a 3.0 engine, and it's a whopping great barge. And it hovers around 1400Kg.

The MR2 really must be made of lead !

because any car with less roof, eg t-bars or convertables, need more strength in the pillars, such as around the windscreen, for protection in case u end up upside down...convertables r usually the heaviest in of a range

Yes, but not by nearly 200Kg ! It's more like 50Kg usually :)
