Removing Elextronic Fuel Control from SD1 v8?

Hello All,

Firstly, I'm sorry - I may have just posted a blank post.

Secondly, I'm rolling this around the classics ng at the minute but I think it may be better suited here.

I am dismantling a 1985 SD1 3.5 V8 with the intention of stuffing the engine into an mg. It has SU carbs but also an Electronic Fuel Control system.

I honestly think that getting this Fuel Control system out intact and succesfully transplanting it into another car with the engine is beyond me. Its like an explosion in a spaghetti factory.

Also, not least because there is also a swanky security system on the car which seems to have wires going into and out of everything.

As there was very little wiring going into the engine, this freaked me out when I saw it. I was expecting to find something but not the monster that I came across.

What are my options ?

Swap it all including the fuel system

Bung on a pair of carbs (SU) and manifold. (yuk)

Chop top off manifold (leaves 2 "holes") make a mounting plate for fords

38DGAS weber as used on the 3 litre V6 which works better than the SUs.

Buy a manifold to fit a big 4 barrel downdraft holly carb (thats my prefered option!)

Fit two banks of bike carbs on home made manifolds. (My brothers choice on his V8 sierra)

Thanks,

It already has SU carbs on it - if I wanted to ditch the ECU what mods would I need to make?

I doubt it. ;-)

It will have an entirely self contained loom for that part so it is just an add-on to the 'standard' car loom. The same as the EFI models.

Well bodgers rule everywhere. But if you want to retain that system it wouldn't be difficult to get an unbodged secondhand loom. From any of the SD1 specialists. It actually works very well.

The option - as I said elsewhere - is to replace the carbs with older purely mechanical ones as regards mixture and idle speed. Or an aftermarket carb setup. It's up to you whether this is cost effective.

Can't he just ditch the electronics and fit a Facet fuel pump or something? And yeah, buy a Holley and ditch the SU's.

Or fit four downdraft twin Webbers for ultimate fuel consumption ;)

All of the above!

Are you sure? THey have electronic ignition on the carbed ones but it's a doddle to wire into another car as it's only really ground, and two lives OTOMH.

I managed to get it out, the ECU is a lucas and has a couple of dozen wires coming out of it. It all seems to be to do with the mixture control/choke on the carbs.

I have just cut it where I know it leads nowhere I'm interested in - electric windows etc. I'm planning to use the mg loom as much as possible and add in only the bits from the v8 engine.

I can take a pic and post it if you all want to see, but its just a mass of wires.

Dave - I know you have an SD1, for all your help if you need any bits give me a shout. If they are not needed/promised/set up for ebay/chucked away you can have them for postage.

On the SD1, all the add on bits like the electronic ignition and carb or EFI loom are plug in, so can be removed complete with a bit of care.

Would you like a scan of the circuit diagram giving wire colours, etc?

That's very kind, but there's nothing I need at the moment, and the cellar is already near full of 'just in cases' ;-)

A scan of the Loom would be very helpful indeed. The two manuals I have only make reference to it but don'r provice any diagrams. I'm trying to get an up to date series 2 one. Can you email or is it to big?

I'll do it tomorrow.
