RWYB: Full Face or Open Face Helmet?

Aug 22, 2004 36 Replies

It's about time the ACU and RACMSA got their act together and came up with a standard that'll cover both 2 wheel and 4 wheel regulations - would help if the manufacturers produced both, too.

It would really piss me off if I took to the track on 4 wheels and had to buy a 2nd helmet, as my Shoei is incredibly confortable (and not to mention expensive).

I use a full face because you have a steering wheel.

Same here. My head is worth way more than that. Though my family and friends probably doubt it.

Only works if you drive a Merc.

windscreen...?

You'd use a full face because I have a steering wheel? :)

I'd probably be more inclined to use a full face if I were driving a car without a steering wheel.

Just because you have a windscreen doesn't mean in an accident you won't smash your face open on the steering wheel. Thats why I use an full face. Though smashing my face open on the steering wheel might actually improve my looks.

Fraser

No, no, it was the way you put it rather than what you said.

To be fair, it's a side on impact that would concern me more, rather than head on. Head on, the airbag should do its thing. But the full face will prevent those nasty burns.

Full face helmets have the disadvantages of inferior visibility, and being less comfortable if you've only just started wearing one. But they're perceived as being safer.

I really shouldn't post when I am half asleep. I don't have an airbag in my car, hence the full face helmet.

Fraser

Eh ?

The whole reason that people buy aftermarket alloys, is because they look better !

I've yet to see a car that actually looks better on aftermarket wheels - most just look 'kevved'.

I can see the point in replacing steel wheels with alloys, but even then I'd go for OEM stuff where possible.

Er, Fiesta RS Turbo (mind you they are kevved at the factory)

Wilky uses an open face helmet and wins races :)

You can go for the peephole balaclava look ;)

The highwaymen would never have gotten away with it if he'd gone full face. (c:

I think my TI does - otherwise the factory wheels would be back on it !

Only if they're HOOOOOOOJ rims.

My helmet cost a fortune, and is Gold certified, so i'd like to think that i'd be able to use it in a car as well.
