Slightly OT but it annoyed me

Yesterday a colleague and I were stuck behind a bus, which had a big sign on the back saying to the effect of, "when full this bus produces one fifteenth of the pollution caused by one car and one driver."

So presumably it produces as much pollution when full as 7.5 cars with two people.

But wait, I could see just three people plus the driver and it has a capacity of 70 seats. So it is carrying a rounded up six percent. Thus it's roughly as efficient as one car carrying one person. We were in the more efficient form of transport.

FFS it was a double decker with something like 70 seats and four people in it.

Thus rang the bus company to ask them why they use such a sign on a double decker on such a quiet route. "It's to encourage people to use the bus."

Who's my MP? Who came up with that stupid sign? Grrr!

It's worse than that (if you look up some posts on uk.rec.driving from a couple of years back you can see where I crunched the numbers for the different types of pollution a dull double decker 1/15 of a car per person sounds like it's limited to one of the gasses and compared to a petrol car of moderate size. Looking at say micro particulates you will find that the bus even fully loaded would be on par with 1-2 TDi cars with just the driver. I guess having a sign on the back saying "when full this buss produces the same amount of carcinogenic particulates as a car (or more than a petrol car)" wouldn't be conducive to gaining passengers.

You were in Edinburgh? Damn, you should have said. I had a boring day.

As for the rant, I agree. I hate buses.

A lot of the gas buses out there came in during the 90s and were heralded as being super duper environmentally friendly compared to any diesel bus. 10 years later and the companies have discovered they were incredibly unreliable, the cost of maintaining the gas stations is horrendous and modern diesel buses are much cleaner anyway.

However the aforementioned sticker almost certainly doesnt relate to the older double decks that are still in service. I kinda deal with a lot of this in my job and the older double decks have ancient engines that are very inefficient - they drink diesel like it's going out of fashion.

I've been getting up at that sort of time for years now. Not a problem to me, even if I don't hit the sack until 1am.
