Top Gear last night...

The V8 Capri "Perana"'s were built in SA by a geezer called Basil Green.

The greatest Capri ever was one of his, an insane race one known as Z181.. very silly car indeed that one.

Strictly, foley is SFX done by a human at the dub - ie footsteps, etc. Of course the foley artist could go vroom vroom...

Watching the Stig's lap tho, the Beemer appeared to understeer and wallow quite a lot... Whereas the Golf looked, and was, much faster.

Ah, too subtle for me. But then Hollywood overdub just about every sodding car engine with a V8 anyway, so after a while you don't notice.

I knew it was shot in NZ, but I figured Ford's offerings would be much the same between the two countries.

Hmmm. Maybe the 3.0 screws up the balance then, because the 116 most certainly didn't understeer!

Like the Mustang in bullet, was overdubbed with a Ford GT40.

Clarkson even pointed the understeer out! Also, his point of "You may as well just get a Z4" was valid - get one of those instead. Or a new MX5 :)

I can't get enough people in a Z4 (or MX5), and the Sera doesn't help out. Assuming I can sell the Subaru SOMEHOW, I'll need something vaguely practical :(

Did you see the back seats and boot!

Another good reason to go with the R32 over the BMW, so that's practicality, looks, handling and probably depreciation that the R32 wins on. Rather brings us back to Dan's fist post.

You couldn't in a BMW 1-series either, both the boot and back seats are just there for decoration.

Hmm, let me see, Golf or BMW... umm neither, I'll have a 'stang with a

4.6L Triton and blitz either of the hairdresser's cars, for a mere £24K.

Unless it had to go round a corner.

Given that it's got a wider track that either of the kraut cans, and can leave them both miles behind on the stright, neither is going to get close enough for that to be an issue.

Hmmm, on any vaguely twisty road though, or in the damp, my money would be on the Golf to be fair. Obviously though, I'd FAR rather have the Mustang GT than either of the 'Kraut cans' :-)

The R32 did lap the Top Gear track in the same time as the DB7 GT and only 0.3 seconds slower than the 5.7L Monaro VXR

Saw them, sat in them, folded them down. Remember, I drive two cars with the sort of boots that mean you can take EITHER toothpaste OR toothbrush, but not both.

The Sera's boot is for day to day use, pointless despite actually being the same sort of size as a Metro or other small hatchback, because the parcel shelf is made of cheese and costs £100, and has an insanely heavy, factory fit speaker tube. The shelf is SO heavy, it has a bonnet prop that latches into the top of the subwoofer - continued use of the boot results in the compressed fibreboard cracking, flaking and breaking up.

You can get a lot in the Sera if you remove the shelf, divider panel and flip the seats down.

The Beetle has an opening to the otherwise normal-Beetle sized boot (i.e. normal Beetle hatchback with parcelshelf in place) that is exactly the size of two numberplates, one on top of the other. It has no folding seats. The boot is a glorified glovebox.

Compared to those two cars, the 1-series is positively spacious.

The MX5 boot (the old one) is pretty impressive, actually. Looks almost as useful as an XJS!

Find me someone contract hiring a Mustang, Chrysler 300C or MG ZT260 for £200+VAT a month, and I'm there with bells on.

However, I reckon there are LOADS of cars I'd have over the 130i or R32 if I was buying - but then if I was buying with that much money, I can think of many more used cars I'd rather have.

Given the choice between the two, I'd have the 130i and some specialist suspension tweakery.

But the Monaro driver was having fun.

Hmm, 192bhp/ton and a 13.88 1/4 vs 186bhp/ton with a 14.08 1/4.

The R32 is a bit of a lard though.
