What variety of Golf? I'm asking a couple of people elsewhere....

MK3.5

So, it looks like a MKIV from the front, but is actually a MK3 under the skin. It's a girly ragtop, but the important oily bits are MK3.

Apologies, I was hoping that meant date wise, and I thought that engine was newer :-)

R36 it is then I guess? Still, that is 300bhp, it'd probably do... If it used his current 4 cyl LPG system, and when that was on, turned the other 2 un-lpg'd cylindars off, that would be quite a neat trick hehe. 300bhp 3.6 V6, and like, 8p a mile to fuel or something :-)

Opinion has it that a 2.0 ABF goes in without too much trouble.

Pretty much anything will go in if you're prepared to change more stuff.

Reccomendation was a VR6 24V with a MK3 box, but that sounds like more work than you had planned.

Not an expert myself, so I asked some chaps that would know:

Ooh, that's handy. I'm a member on there too. (Felicia Classic 1.3)

Many thanks for the legwork.

ABF would be the obvious simple swap (2.0 16V GTI lump)

The 2.0 8V of that era is a bit shit. 112 horses, which is the same as the original 1.8 8V GTI engine of 20 odd years ago.

You're right of course. The attraction of this engine is that it would bolt straight in with no electrical or plumbing issues to resolve. It has either 112 or 115bhp depending on where you look. 123 lb/ft of torque too. Whilst not wonderful, they are both improvements on my current 1.6 which is

100 for both figures. I suspect the area under the torque curve will be far better than my current 1.6 as well, which is where driveability is.

We'll see. If one comes up at the righ money, I think I'll have it.

I bet a 16V KR from a MK2 would fit straight in too. Same block as the ABF more or less. 139 horses...

Wiring ? Plumbing ?

:-)

Um. ABFs do go into MK2s without a lot of plumbing so I can't see why the KR wouldn't go into the MK3. The block has essentially stayed the same for donkeys years.

Anyway, I've got a KR that I want rid of so it's obviously the best solution :D.

My gas system depends on signals from the exisiting 'electronic' fuel injection. Whatever the solution, it would definitely involve retaining that.

What bits are with the KR ?

Not for the golf, but it strikes me that one of them onto a Passat / 80 / A4 transaxle would be great in a mid engined car. Like the one I have the plans here for. :-)
