Yaris Steering tight

Hi Folks, I've taken the Yaris back twice but they say all is well, but I and several other reckon the stiffness in the steering is bad. Around the twisty roads it's ok, but in the straight ahead position there is no power assist, ie. no current to the electric motor. Is it the friction in the rack/pinion, the McPherson struts or the 12 volt worm and wheel behind the Steering. Any ideas folks! Jim. North London.

That's the idea of electric PAS. You turn off the motor when you're not steering, reducing fuel consumption compared to a hydraulic system where the pump's always running.

All power steering is meant to have little assistance at the striaght ahead posision. For high speed driving when the wheel spend most of its time striaght ahead. It stops the car being twitchy on the motorway.

Should there be ?

If your steering was light whilst going straight ahead, at speed, it would be very hard to go in a straight line on the motorway !
