I think I need an RWD car for fun. Or 4WD. Current thoughts are: 924, Sierra Forby, Sierra, Sierra Estate with a silly engine, 360. Something I could pick up cheap, strip and strap big lamps to, then enter motor club rallies etc. in would be nice.

Sierra 4x4s are easy enough to pick up for sensible money. As for Sierra Estate with silly engine, keep yer mitts off :-P
Alternatif for the Sierra is the BMW e30 series, cheap and plentifull, all sizes of engines and even a Rover V8 fits as a glove. RWD or 4WD.
4wd without power is boring, 4wd with power expensif. Don't aks how I know.Stay away for the Porsche 924, the 944 offers much more possibilities.
But as for bang for bucks and sheer (criminal) driving pleasure: nothing beats the Lotus seven-clones, Locost's, etc. Lotus 7-clones with bike-engine should be outlawwed and that's exactly what they are here :(

you had me going there :) sierra 4x4 2.9 estate all day long plenty of poke there to get you in to the mud, not enough to scare you senseless with the fuel economy that turbo's can bring with a flex of the big toe the estate handles better for back end slides as there is more of a pedulum effect :)

If you wanna do motor club rallies, then smaller cars are the way to go. A
360 is a big bigger than i would have liked, but cheap RWD action and masses of fun. I could still turn it round in 1 go down a single track road. But of course small RWD cars arent easy to find. But i'm sure a sierra will do the job well enough as long as its got the right engine..Also consider 325s. You can pick an early one up cheap as chips and they're nice and quick out the box.
Unlikely that you'll find any of these, but a Sunbeam is ideal. Or a Chevette, or even a Manta/Monza. Mk1/2 Escort. Triumph Dolomite.
Erm, why though? Isn't the 192bhp 2.5 straight 6 24v one (M50) good enough? Not that much in it?
Not to take away from the fact that the GM 3.0 24v lump is a great engine though.

Its not tuneable tho peter, but the carlton engine is. Plus you can work around the gsi without any problems and imo I think the extra capacity of the carlton would take a turbo conversion much better. Plus to get the M50 engine I might have to pay as much as the carlton engine ontop again than if I were to buy a lower capacity e36.
That'll be the one. The gearchange on that might even be up to John Deere standards.
Ah, fair enough then. Tell you what, you could increase the stroke to make it, I dunno, 3.6 litres capacity, and add a couple of turbos. I reckon you'd get around 377bhp. That's a good idea. I wonder if anyone's thought of that before :-)

Don't know about later ones but earlier ones were RWD
And there is always the GTT turbo 1.4 option if you want more go (although I don't know if there was a rwd turbo option).

Don't know much about the Mazda other than it is a 1.6 turbo and 4x4 and looks a little like a Fiesta. Should be fun if you were to badge it up with Ford/Fiesta/popular/1.1 badges and hunt people at the traffic lights. If the 323 interests you at all I believe they are very popular in Holland.

no, very rare they bore engines out these days, the 3.0 is good for 4.0
Are the later 2.0 Pintos injection? Or do I want the Twink? Or do I want to get a Sierra and put a 2.0 Zetec in it? Or should I just get a V6 in the first place :D?
IMHO of a 2.0i Ghia they dont go very quickly and drink fuel. Best to get a V6. Still drink fuel, but at least you'll be going quickly ;) What were the later DOHC jobbies like, dojj or Pete?
ISTR Conor or someone saying they were a tad fragile, hence me asking if they're good.
