Get engine hot, then pressurize the cooling system (15psi no more, you'll burst the rad!) with the plugs out and let it sit for 15mins or so. have alook to see if there is any water sat on the pistions.

OR 4 gas analyser sniffer in the expansion bottle whilst its running. Any combustion gases (i.e. a reading) then its definately leaking.

Go speak to your local garage. My bloke uses a dye that's simply poured into the coolant. Any leaks, and it's indicated by the dye.

Will only tell you if you've got gases leaking into the coolant tho, so any 'ok' verdict is not trustable.

Agreed. It's used as a "definately shafted" device, not a "definately ok" device :)

You could contaminate the coolant with something radioactive and then measure the exhaust gas with a Geiger counter.

Actually, that was meant to be humorous but it would actually work and not have to be especially dangerous either... Used to be a glow in the dark paint what you could buy from toy shops, contained radium that would absorb nicely in a combustion chamber....

Just make one. Fit an air reservoir to the filler cap, and use an airline to pressurise it. Or some similar concoction.
