8.8 woes...fixed

Hi All,

With some expert help from a Ford savvy friend (with my broken collar bone, he really did all of the work) the '89 and '00 have new clutch packs from SVTs excellant re-build kit.

As things go, the '89's looked much better than expected after all of the abuse it's received. The '00 is a different story. The carrier bearings were well on into failure. Likely my fault, as I didn't notice the blown pinion seal when my daughter 'borrowed' it for college until too late. (Didn't spot the driveway) My friend also mentioned that he'd seen several '99 up Mustangs with this problem. In this area (Houston) we'd had a tropical storm stall and dump several inches of rain, forcing many to drive through very flooded streets in Feb. 2002. Why '99 and up? Just mostly what he'd worked on lately.

Anyway, the '00's trac-lock was pretty well used up by 107K miles. I would guess that these should be re-built in the 75K mile range to be considered preventative maintenance, rather than a repair. Boring figures are the '89 10 had thou backlash and the '00 had 7 thou. and weren't adjusted. Those that wish to personalize their clutch lock up with the shims provided should mic the original shims and stay with in two sizes. The '89 stayed with .025s and the '00 upped one with .030s. The '00 doesn't get the big second gear scratch it did, but has a neat little side step now.
