I can remember paying about $1.40/gallon in Texas in late spring/early summer 1981. And those were 1981 dollars. It was not the best time to be driving a '66 Mustang V8 that averaged about 13-14 mpg, aside from the fact that anytime is a good time to be driving a '66 Mustang.
