Good vintage Mustang repair in No. Cal.?

I have a '68 ragtop 289 in need of a variety of things; an engine rebuild or valve job, a loose shifter (automatic) and possibly some suspension work. I don't have the ability do do these repairs myself and wondered if anybody knew of a good place to take the car in the Sonoma/Marin/Napa county area.

If possible, I'd like to squeeze a little more power out. The car is stock, except for dual exhaust I had put in a few years ago. I was thinking of headers and a 4-barrel. How much power would they add? What would be the cost? Also, is there a way to stiffen the suspension?

TIA

Here are some ideas:

  1. Do a Google for Mustang Restoration in California, classic car restorations in California, etc. or go to
    formatting link
check for links to the services you seek.
  2. check the yellow pages for automotive, classic cars, hot rods, and similar, and get refereals.

  1. check shops around you and ask them on the sly if need be, if they had you car, where or to whom would they take it for the kinds of work you seek.

  2. I have received a LOT of help from Mustang clubs, particularly the one here in Shasta County

  1. keep track of this NG and you can get lots of input/help on doing things for yourself.

By the way, the shifter problem is a matter of a couple of rubber washers. There's a ton of stuff I am learning to do for myself.... and things I don't yet feel comfortable with, I have met people through clubs who have introduced me to people who have the expertise I lack. Everything from engine work to interior, to paint, etc.

Suspension is a do it yourself project in most cases. Buy a rebuild kit from a reputable outfit like

(pst has a video on how to do the rebuild BUT it shows work on a MOPAR, and yours is a little different. If memory serves, the catalog from
formatting link
has a photo essay on the task.

If you were this far north I could put you on to some fantastic people. I have a 65 Fastback being restored by Cool Mustangs of Cool, CA (just east of Sacramento). My 66 Fastback is mostly a home project to get it ready for the Kool April Nites Classic Car Auction coming up the weekend of the 16th of April.

Does Sac Mustang actually do the work or just supply the parts.... I thought the latter. I KNOW they are good for parts. So is J&K Mustang. Mustangs Plus (Stocton) is also very good, and they have installation if I recall. But back to the original request.. Sac Mustang is a bit of a drive from Napa area. There must be something closer if John wants the work done for him.

By the way, John.... a lot of what you could probably do yourself (with or without help from someone who knows how) is pretty pricey if you have it done by a shop. I'd go with referals from local clubs for best price for best work, and/or assistance in doing it yourself.
