Need Advice on differential issue

Hi All,

I just recently bought a used 8.8 rear-end with 3.73 gears. My mechanic took it apart and told me that there was slight damage to the pinion. It was along the lines that one or 2 of the teeth were damaged slightly. Should I be concerned about this?........the guy who sold it to me had it in his Stang before me and didn't have any problems.

Thanks

Tough to say without looking at the gear.... often times there may be some chipping at the extreme heel or toe of the gear with no ill effects.... most of the power is transferred through the centre of the tooth. As we approach either heel of toe, the load is shared by teeth on either side.

Without knowing exactly what your tech said I can only opine that he was letting you know that there is an existing concern in order to cover his own backside should problems arise.

deburr the gears, install new bearings/races if needed and run it. Use mobil 1 synthetic gear lube and don't use any friction modifier/additive. You might consider installing new friction disc's and installing an extra disc on each side to prevent "one wheel peel" which is common on aged limited slip 8.8's
