OT: White van speaker scam

My girlfriend got suckered into the white van speaker scam... Anyone heard of it? A google search will provide you with endless information on it. She got hit right at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ.

I know most of us wouldn't fall for a deal too good to be true, especially buying equipment from the back of a van in a parking lot (come on now). But some people get suckered into it... Anyone else have experiences they would like to share?

Aw shit! They hit on me every time I go to the local DIY carwash. last tiem I got lucky and was able to flag down a passing cop car. :-) It's one of the older scams. 'too many loaded, have them cheap'. Those speakers are a POS, you can tell the moment you pick them up, they weigh next to nothing so the boxes are made of paper rather than nice thick MDF.

I bought a pair of speakers from a van about 10 years ago for $100. I wasn't expecting much but I must say that for $100 the speakers sounded pretty decent. Actually, I was quite surprised with them. I sold them to a friend for $100 and he still uses them to this day.

Those slime bags used to be seen around Toronto. I actually went to the place where they manufactured the crap to see what kind of operation it was. Basically, they use dirt-cheap components from Mainland China sold to the unwary as "well known" speakers that were being dumped, etc. Some of them don't even have crossovers between the drivers or damping material and the case quality is TRASH. Cost to mfg. was at most $15.00 per box.

I'm surprised a girl would even entertain such a pitch. My experiences are pretty much limited to the dorks who hang out at Arco's with their hood up, begging for money from motorists filling their tank. "My car won't start and I'm on my way to Reno to help my dying mother...won't you help?"

That kinda reminds me back when I was running a gas station. Had a guy come up and he asks for a few bucks for gas. Says his car is just down the road, and he ran out. (Mind you I'd seen the guy many times and knew his scam.) My supervisor at the time was there, and he offers to put some gas in a can and take the guy back to his car to get him on his way. Needless to say, the dude was busted. He didn't want the gas in the can. Was pretty funny to see the expression on his face, I was almost rolling across the lot laughing.
