Shop Manual question

I have an 87 GT Vert. I have been trying to locate shop manuals (the big ones) for a couple of years. Have had no luck. Helm lists them but they are always out of stock. Never found them on ebay or at any show or swap meet. I am thinking of buying manuals for a 1990 Mustang. I am aware of most of the differences (speed denstiy vs. mass air being the biggest) in the years. Think this is a good idea to buy some 1990 shop manuals? Or does anyone have any 1987 manuals they want to sell? Thanks, Claud

Are you talking about Chiltons or Haynes or the actual Ford Shop Manuals? I've had luck with Amazon for the Chiltons manuals.

An alternative you might want to seriously consider, is to purchase an account at

This has all the information the shop manual has, and actually probably a little more..

The account is based on the car. They will give you access to all the data in a shop manual (only eaisier to find) for the first car for a year for

24.95, additional cars are 14.95 per year.

If you go to the site and click the free demo, they have the full information for the 1995 Toyota Tercel 4dr, with the 1.5L, and the information for a 2WD 93 Ford Ranger with a V6

I have an account there for my cars. It is actually a...spinoff od the

site, which is what some shops use as an alterntive to having seperate books for all vehicles. (though I would hate to imagine what a shops pricing on that is..)

I have the shop manuals for 1987 and have found that I was able to use the

1987 shop manuals for my 1991 without much trouble. The big differences, as you mentioned, being things like mass air versus speed density as well as other major changes such as the presence of an air bag. However, for pretty much everything else it worked just fine... there were a few electrical wiring changes I have come across, but not too many and in general all confusion can be cleared up by process of elimination or by using a multitester. Ultimately I bought the 1991 manual as well since it's a Mustang-only manual, whereas the 1987 manual covers the Thunderbird, Crown Victoria, and something else as well making it a VERY bulky manual set.

If you can, try to get a 1988 shop manual. As I recall that year had mass air in the California only models, but was speed density everywhere else... you'd presumably get the best of both worlds that way. All the major mechanical stuff should be the same, which is probably what you'll use it for most frequently anyhow. I'd suggest working your way up the years until you find a manual, but I wouldn't suggest going any older than

1987 as the body and interior portions won't even come close.

I had an 87 GT vert too. I bought the full set of manuals for it and barely used them. How much are they worth? I guess for enuff money I would go to the hassle of finding them and shipping them off. I don't remember what they cost me.

Here's a few fotos:
