98 altima timing

Feb 21, 2004 1 Replies

I'm getting conflicting information on cheching timing on a 98 altima. One source says just put a light on it ( this is a dealer tech btw) Service publications I have looked at say you have to disconnect the TP sensor rev the engine several times etc. to check timing. The purpose is to check for proper timing not to adjust it. Any help would be appreciated

I've checked a few SR20DE engines and basically you may get away with it. The timing light may jump around a little bit, but the least advanced position of the light should still show up quite well if your tickover is slow and steady. This position gave the same results as when it's done properly in my small range of experience, but I can see how different engines could give a dissimilar result. You'll know if it's right.
