Altima 93 Stop Going in Reverse

I parked my car in a parking lot and turned off the engine for 30 minutes. When I cranked the engine up, it could no longer back up. The Reverse gear acts just like the parking gear now. When I put my car in Reverse gear and hit the gas, the sound of the engine increased, but the car doesn't go anywhere. Other than not being able to back up, the car runs fine. When driving, I had tried putting my car to L2 mode, then L1 mode, both will slow down my car (normal).



I only had the distributor replaced 6 months ago. Could this have something to do with this? Or does this mean that I'll need to have my transmission system replaced? (I'm not a careless driver, I always made sure that my car stops before I change R to F gear and vice versa).

Check fluid level of trans. Does it work after a drive when engine is warmed up? What color is fluid and does it smell burnt? When was ATF fluid last changed out. Might try replacing ATF fluid.

The fluid level of trans is OK. It still doesn't work when the engine is warmed up. The color of the fluid is orange-ish and clear. It kinda smell burnt. I'm not sure about this because I haven't smelled trans fluid before. So I brought the car to Advanced Auto Parts. A tech there took a look and he told me that it's OK - doesn't need to be changed.

Do you think I should go ahead and try replacing the ATF fluid? Thank you for the help.

You've already ruled out a mechanical problem with the linkage between the shifter and transmission? Before you waste money on an oil change, which will have to be dumped for any internal transmission repairs, get the linkage checked.
