Failed SMOG test, PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a 99 Altima with 49,000 miles. I just got the smog done on it, it passed the emissions part but it failed the "functional" part because the Ignition Timing is off. It says Ignition Timing 12 BTDC. Is this serious? Hard / Expensive to fix? What can cause this? Is this damaging my engine? Now, I have to get this fixed and do a retest for $40. The jerks knew there was a problem w/ the timing before they did the smog but went w/ the test anyways :(.

thanks

they actually did the right thing. they are to run the inspection and if they see something that will fail the visual they are to fail it and notify you afterwards. they are not supposed to fix anything before the inspection begins, although "nice" techs will.

12BTDC isn't to bad, check on your emissions sticker and see what it's supposed to be set at. you could've have a guy who was 110% a stickler for the rules / by the book type. Isn't it adjusted by the computer?

I think the ignition should be 20 degrees. He wants to charge me for the retest. Arn't re-test usually free in CA? Is there a law or something?
